That is exactly what iCal enables you to do. If it is not working for you, please report what errors you are seeing.
For example, I can export my Notes calendar, and import it into my Mac's calendar.
Here is an example. I select the event, and choose File - Export, set save as type to Calendar File, then click Export. Next I confirm just selected documents (not all).
I can then import the ics file into any calendar that supports the standard.
If I open the file with a text editor you can see the information...
